Chapter 3 (page 28)

Another gem along the way. What was once just simply the steering wheel, we come to find out was a real life diamond in the rough. Dad had 2 steering wheels for the car, the original - a 3 spoked, almost ceramic looking rather mundane looking wheel and then what he always referred to as the Nardi Wheel. The Nardi was almost always on the car and the original was laying somewhere nearby. But as things progressed and the car began to take shape, I came up with the idea that Dad should have a new Nardi Wheel for the car. So me, my Mom and my sister Sue, all chipped in and got him a "new" Nardi for Christmas one year. Dad was thrilled and loved the new wheel. He put it on display in his office downstairs and anticipated the day he would install it.

Then as most things happened with the Porsche, Dad was in a conversation with Bruce or someone else at Bruce's shop and the Nardi wheel came up. Ultimately Bruce recommended that Dad speak with a guy he knows in California that does these types of restorations and knows Nardi wheels better than anyone. Dad decided to call and speak with him. To give you the quick version of the story, Dad uncovered that the wheel that he had was an original Nardi Wheel made by R. Grosso Nardi himself! This alone put the steering wheels value beyond what any of us could have imagined and over double that once it was restored!!

So suffice it to say that the original was restored and the "new" one that we gave dad is still safely in its box and probably one day soon will find a spot hanging in my basement bar!
