And that was how it went for many years. Of course, unseen events managed to sideline even the smallest work. Things like getting laid off from his company of almost 20 years and the backup of a sewage pipe into the entire downstairs of the house, leaving it an actual bio-hazard and $50,000 damage to the house. But there were also the events that sidelined the project that were on the brighter side, as mentioned earlier, like weddings and Grandchildren! Either way there were plenty of things that would come up, good or bad, that caused a derailment of his restoration project. It was simply his utter determination and persistence that kept every derailment temporary.
We also had some other strokes of luck along the way. If you’ll oblige me another quick side story, when I was in high school I dated a girl that worked at a local restaurant called the Kauffman House in Sumneytown PA. The owner had a son that had a silver and black Porsche, what I thought was a 911 as it had that newer 911 body style. I remember that car sitting in the parking lot, wishing one day I could own a car like that. Eventually, the restaurant closed and those memories of the Kauffman house faded. One day my Dad got a call from Bruce. He said that a guy called him about an old 912 that he had and wanted him to work on it. Bruce told the man that he was simply too busy to take on the 912 project, but he would keep his number if anything came up. Bruce knew my Dad wanted more power and he may want to call the guy about the 912. My Dad told me about the car and he was going to go and check it out. I went with him and low and behold it was the same car from the days at the Kauffman house! It wasn’t a 911 but a 912 and when I asked my Dad what the interest was in the car, he said, the 912 engine will bolt right into the Speedster, but it’s a more powerful engine!
